"Mary Sue" is the name for terrible original characters that have plagued anime fanfiction - they have a perfect body, face and hair, likeable personality, are usually extremely powerful, intelligent, and helpful, make friends with all the characters (and break through the barriers of the most hateful and stoic characters at that). Mary Sue steals the spotlight from all the other characters, has throngs of attractive men in love with her, and though she only chooses one, the rest of the men stay in love with her forever. The story usually ends with Mary Sue dying dramatically in the arms of her beloved and is remembered forever by everyone.

They're sickeningly annoying characters. >_< And I just found out Death Note, the most intelligent manga I've ever read even has them.

Well, no, not just original characters....really bad ones. There are such things as original characters who are put in fanfiction and are actually good characters...they're just extremely rare.

It is possible to make Sues in original stories, but if that's the case you can just google "Mary Sue Litmus Test" and find a test to help you find out if your character's okay or not.
